2021 Wyoming County Greenways, Trails, and Open Space Plan

The 2021 Wyoming County Greenways, Trails, and Open Space Plan was adopted by the Wyoming County Board of Commissioners in Dec. 2021. An effort to develop the Plan began in 2019. The Plan was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) through the Keystone Fund. The Plan follows a recommendation of the 2019-2029 Wyoming County Comprehensive Plan to develop a plan focused on recreation and open space. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, development of the Plan was delayed. Even as the pandemic upended many peoples’ lives, it also showed that public open space, trails, and recreational spaces are more important than ever for wellness and quality of life.

A goal of the Plan is for civic leaders to continue providing expanding recreational opportunities within the County and the infrastructure improvements necessary to enhance recreational spaces. Another goal is for leaders and landowners to create increased connectivity in and throughout the County and its townships and boroughs, including expanding networks of recreational spaces and trails. Another recommendation is for the creation of a countywide council to advocate for municipal parks. Creating a dedicated team of proactive individuals that oversee and assist with park improvements, land acquisitions, and park budgets would create an opportunity for municipalities and the County to synergize resources.
